Serpent in the Thorns
Crispin Guest Book 2
Medieval mystery by Jeri Westerson
GENRE: #HistoricalFiction #MedievalMystery📍 Setting: London (UK) | ⏳ Era: Late 14th Century
My rating: ★★★★★ (5 of 5 stars)
5 full stars well deserved, it has been an amazing read! __ I LOVED IT! __
I really think this series is bound to become one of my absolute favorites; the main character, Crispin Guest, has certainly already stolen my heart in books #1 and #2. He is such a fascinating, deeply human hero.
I'll start by telling you what this second gripping adventure is all about.
| 📜 THE PLOT IN SHORT
This is an engaging adventure from start to finish, and the tension begins immediately with a brutal murder. A simple-minded tavern girl comes to Crispin Guest (our fallen hero) in absolute panic, claiming there is a dead body in her room and that she was the one who killed him. The victim was precisely shot through the heart by an arrow.
It is instantly clear to Crispin that it could not have been her, but things are incredibly serious. The dead man turns out to be a French courier who was secretly delivering an invaluable religious relic to the English king, sent directly by the King of France. To protect the innocent girl from the gallows, Crispin—a former knight fallen into disgrace and estranged from the royal court—decides to keep some dark secrets to himself. Choosing not to reveal everything to the Sheriff will complicate the investigation, leading our hero into trouble after trouble.
| 🤗 MY THOUGHTS
| 🔎⚔️ A GRIPPING MYSTERY AND A LOT OF ACTION:
Crispin's investigations begin immediately and continue at a very good, steady pace for the first 25% of the book. But then, just when it seems that some knots are starting to untie, the pace changes completely and becomes faster and more pressing.
The suspense grows exponentially, leading to a series of daring adventures and sudden twists. Both Crispin and the reader barely get 5 minutes to catch a breath before the unexpected happens again!
It is a rollercoaster of action, intense suspense, sheer desperation, brilliant solutions, and shocking revelations. Some of these truths are truly jaw-dropping, especially if you have read book #1.
There is only fleeting relief before the action explodes again, right up until the final pages. Trust me, you won't have a single second to get bored!
| 🛡️🥀 DON'T EXPECT THE HINT OF ROMANCE FROM BOOK #1:
In this second episode of Crispin Guest, there is no falling in love, no romance, and no soft heartbeats... but I honestly didn't miss it at all! I simply didn't have the time! Everything was so compelling, fast-paced, and layered that I couldn't tear myself away from the pages. My desire to uncover the truth about this dangerous relic was so strong that I felt just as desperate for answers as our protagonist.
| ❤️⚔️ OUR HERO'S EMOTIONAL GROWTH:
Despite the story being set only one year after the first book, our hero follows a significant path of emotional growth that develops beautifully throughout the novel. Crispin is 30 years old, a mature man, but now his soul and his way of perceiving the world are truly deepening.
While before, his noble birth made him feel superior to commoners (sometimes making him appear arrogant), now he pauses to genuinely consider less fortunate people's feelings.
He begins to see the world of the nobility and the rich with different eyes, recognizing the arrogance and meanness that power and greed inspire in human beings.
---> More importantly, Crispin begins to realize how crucial it is to have people who care about him. He truly values their affection and discovers that he reciprocates it, especially toward his young companion, Jack. In the end, both the reader and our hero can draw a deep moral lesson from the hardships he endured.
| 📖 READABLE AS A STANDALONE, BUT STRONGLY RECOMMENDED FROM #1:
I mentioned in my previous review that all the books can be read as standalones, because the author is excellent at recapping Crispin Guest's background and the evolution of his world.
Nonetheless, I believe it is much more satisfying to experience this series starting from book 1. After all, there are 15 books in total, and in addition to the individual mysteries, there is a powerful common thread: the personal life of Crispin and his relationships.
Following his personal journey is equally interesting, and in my humble opinion, it is exactly what binds the reader to our hero and makes us so passionate about this well-written series.
| 👑📜 THE HISTORICAL PART & THE ROYAL INTRIGUES:
In this book, the medieval background is enriched by the fascinating history of a holy relic: the famous Crown of Thorns that Jesus wore on the day of his crucifixion, along with the legends of its power to grant invincibility to the pure of heart.
Even for non-religious readers, these are deeply interesting historical notions to learn—the kind of rich detail they never teach you in schools!
Additionally, we meet the Duke of Lancaster, John of Gaunt, who plays a major role in the plot. While the specific intrigue is a brilliant work of fiction created by the author, the character really existed and was a figure of massive historical importance.
As the uncle of King Richard II, he was the richest and most influential man in England after the king.
He was also the progenitor of the House of Lancaster, the royal dynasty starting with his son Henry IV (who deposed Richard II). This historical house would later fight the House of York starting in 1455, sparking the legendary **War of the Two Roses** (red for Lancaster, white for York). You can find all these fascinating historical notes in the author's epilogue at the end of the book!
| 🕶️❌ IT'S NOT A COZY MYSTERY:
Be prepared: this does not belong to the cozy genre. There are some harmless swear words, realistic fight scenes, and killings in self-defense. Nothing overly graphic or worse than what we usually see on TV, but it definitely has a darker, sharper edge than a standard cozy.
| 🏁✍️ IN CONCLUSION:
I definitely recommend *Serpent in the Thorns* to anyone who loves historical mysteries where high-octane action is perfectly balanced with smart investigation, all wrapped in an authentic setting and enriched by the author's notes.
Thank you all for stopping by and reading my opinion. What about you? Do you prefer your mysteries cozy or with a bit of historical edge? Let me know in the comments below!

GENERE: #GialloStorico #GialloMedievale📍 Luogo: Londra (UK) | ⏳ Era: Tardo 14° Secolo
| 📜 TRAMA IN BREVE
| 🔎⚔️ MISTERO COINVOLGENTE E TANTA AZIONE
