What a wonderfully breathtaking story, my friends! I swear, I would start reading it all over again right this very second! 💘
This is a magnificent tale of profound rebirth and a beautifully delicate love story. It is packed with personal and political intrigues inspired by real historical events and real figures who actually existed.
With its fascinating, fragrant oriental setting, a massive cast of exceptionally well-drawn characters showing so many fascinating facets, and a jaw-dropping ending with an unexpected, unpredictable twist, this book completely stole my heart.
I utterly adored the protagonist and the dashing young man of her dreams!
I fell for them completely, and the only tiny thing that kept me from inventing a 6th golden star for this book is that I desperately wanted their romance to be more prominent and deeply described. If only the kisses and intimate love scenes had been just a little bit longer and more intense, the book would have been absolute perfection for me! But even so, it is a masterpiece.

|👥 THE MAIN CHARACTERS AND A SLOW-BURN ROMANCE
Harry and Bee actually knew each other as children, back when she and her little brother also lived in India.
The book opens beautifully with a nostalgic scene back in time, where a young 8 years old Bee, her younger brother Ralph, and 10 years old Harry secretly sneak into and explore the forbidden Palace of Jahanara Mahal.
They are searching for a legendary stolen jewel, the fabled Rose of Golconda—a gemstone that Harry seems not only deeply fascinated by, but almost dangerously obsessed with.
These childhood games already reveal a tender fondness and protective affection between Harry and Bee. However, that very same day, the two siblings are abruptly and forcibly taken back to England by their strict mother. Our two favorites won't cross paths again until 24 long years later.
When they finally reunite in India, despite Bee's initial intense embarrassment, Harry speaks to her with such warmth and ease, as if they had parted just the afternoon before. They both remember every single detail of their childhood and their shared adventures; the spark between them is instantly alive, but neither of them dares to cross the boundary of friendly intimacy just yet.
|👩💼 BEE: A POWERFUL HEROINE OF MODERN RESILIENCE
The entire story is beautifully told in the first person by Bee herself. Throughout the narrative, she openly shares her deepest thoughts, her sharp disappointments, her crushing defeats, and her fears, but also her blossoming hopes and those vibrant new experiences that inevitably raise her expectations.
We get to watch her beautifully grow from a woman who passively accepts that there is nothing left for her in life, to an independent force who builds a real future for herself in an unfamiliar land.
She passionately follows her own innovative ideas to fit into a complex society, not just doing her small part, but actively creating a monumental project whose realization will intertwine and save many other local lives.
I absolutely love Bee because she is a fiercely positive character, but wonderfully imperfect. The author allows us to see her raw fragility, her momentary weaknesses, but also her immense willpower and how she relentlessly fights against adversity and the rigid, narrow-minded views of the colonial society.
It was incredibly satisfying to see how she boldly opposes the outdated male vision of the "weak and incapable woman."
She successfully draws other Indian women—who until then had only known complete submission to their husbands' will—into this empowering belief of inner strength.
Bee brings a beautiful touch of modernity: controlling one's own destiny through hard work and commitment. We see her suffer, get angry, and fiercely get back up after every single fall. Yet, despite her grand success, she is never presumptuous; she remains a genuine, down-to-earth girl we can all deeply identify with.
🕵️♂️ HARRY: THE CHARMING DEFENDER OF WOMEN'S STRENGTH
Born to an English father and a French mother, Harry seems to have blended completely and seamlessly into the rich fabric of the Indian world ever since he was a little boy. As an adult, he is a devoted young father and the widower of a beautiful Indian noblewoman. He collaborates professionally with the British forces, yet chooses to live his personal life completely intertwined with his Indian family.
What I respect most about Harry is that, unlike Ralph (Bee's traditional younger brother), he is incredibly open-minded and never, ever places restrictions on women.
He never judges them as incapable, fragile, or silly. This stands in sharp contrast to Ralph, who despite living in India, retains the rigid, arrogant manners of Western men of the era, whose wives were kept strictly locked away from politics, independence, and business. Harry is the exact opposite!
He constantly encourages Bee, lets her know he wholeheartedly supports her grand ideas, and when he does offer criticism, he does so constructively. He gently helps her understand where she is miscalculating in her relationships with women from a completely different culture. On top of that, Harry is a deeply tender, playful father, strikingly handsome, and fiercely adventurous, which makes him utterly irresistible not only in Bee's eyes, but in ours too!
|🔥 A PASSION THAT MAKES YOU DREAM AGAIN
Their love story made me fall completely and hopelessly in love! Even though it unfolds across just a few select scenes, a handful of stolen glances, and one single, magical night of love—which the author describes in very brief, broad terms—the sheer electric tension of their falling in love is brilliantly evident in Bee's storytelling.
His intense, burning gazes, her racing heart, her desperate desire to be kissed, his sudden, stolen, and impulsive embrace and fiery kiss, and her longing to see him again during the long days when he is away on dangerous missions... it is pure poetry!
Even before a single kiss is exchanged, Harry, Bee, and his little son Jay already feel like a real family. Even before they are officially together, Harry is always there to silently support her, watching over her from a distance, following her with his protective gaze, keeping her safe.
Bee has absolutely no romantic experience with men, except for her brief, cold marriage to a much older, traditional Englishman. Yet, she doesn't need a manual... their hearts speak to each other through raw, pure emotion, and despite the devious, wicked schemes of a bitter rival, their love proves to be unbreakable.
The ending is incredibly beautiful, sweet, and satisfying. I won't say another word to avoid spoilers, but it is glorious (even though, I repeat, I really wish the author had given their romance a few more chapters to breathe!).
| 👥 A MONUMENTAL CAST OF SIDE CHARACTERS
If Harry and Bee made my heart skip a beat, you should know that Charlotte Betts has also done a monumental, flawless job with the secondary characters.
In this novel, absolutely no one is there to simply act as a background extra; each person serves as a crucial, intricate piece to help the reader truly comprehend this complex, shifting world.
The most fascinating contrast is undoubtedly the sharp division between the women and the men in the book. On one hand, we have the almost irritating, rigid obtuseness of Ralph (Bee's brother). He perfectly, vividly embodies the typical British man of the era—deeply convinced that women should never touch politics, independence, or business. On the other hand, we are completely overwhelmed by the brilliant impact of the female characters.
There is the majestic power, regal dignity, and immense strength of character of Jahanara Begum, the matriarch and lady of the palace; the protective, unwavering sweetness of Leela, who loves Ralph deeply despite all his glaring flaws; and the combative, fiercely angry spirit of Lakshmi, whose actions will keep you constantly on the absolute edge of your seat.
And what about the embroidery workshop? The constant bickering, sharp rivalries, and complex social dynamics among the embroiderers provide a breathtaking, authentic glimpse into the everyday life of local women.
Balancing the political tension are the pure spontaneity and overwhelming vivacity of little Jay, Harry's sweet son, and the caring, strict severity of his aunt Sangita.
Together, they imbue the novel with an intimate, beautiful sense of "family safety."
The sweet pregnant stray dog and then her puppies complete the picture with an extra touch of warmth.
I admit there are many characters, and I was a bit confused during the first few chapters, especially because of the honorific term "Begum" following the names of noble women (which back then indicated a lady of high society or of the Nizam's court). But once you get into the natural swing of things, you'll quickly realize that every single character is completely essential to painting the beautiful chiaroscuro of late-18th-century Hyderabad.
| 🕌 A FASCINATING SETTING THAT AWAKENS ALL SENSES
One thing that truly, deeply captivated me about this book is Charlotte Betts's extraordinary, rare skill in depicting the historical settings and scenes through all five senses.
The author possesses an incredible ability to effortlessly transport the reader to a place so distant in time and—in my specific case, given that I'm Italian—so profoundly different from my own native culture.
As I turned the pages, I could almost physically sense the vibrant, suffocating warmth of India. I was completely enveloped by the descriptions of the intense aromas of exotic spices, the rich scents of jasmine oils, and even the stark realism of the foul odors of muddy ditches.
I could vividly see the vibrant, shimmering colors of the luxurious fabrics, almost feeling their silky touch and airy lightness on my skin.
I felt the magnetic allure of the architectural grandeur of the luxurious palaces, rich with breathtaking arabesque inlays and glittering jewels embedded everywhere. Yet, this beauty stands in fascinating contrast to the realistic cracks running down the fading walls and the thick dust settling on the priceless crystal chandeliers.
That exotic, magnetic atmosphere, full of sharp contrasts and lurking dangers, was perfectly matched by the volatile climate: first scorching hot, muggy, and almost suffocating, then humid and perilous with the heavy, roaring monsoon rains.
I was utterly enraptured by the Jahanara Mahal, with its decadent charm and its heavy family secrets. In a certain sense, it represents the true third protagonist of the story—a magical, silent character who witnessed the deepest joys and sorrows of the colorful souls inhabiting it.
While the Jahanara Mahal itself is a fictional place, the architectural beauties described by the author are entirely real!
I can personally confirm this because, driven by my usual curiosity, I searched online for another palace mentioned in the text: the majestic "Chowmahalla Palace", where Bee is formally invited by the influential wives of the Nizam (the sovereign Muslim monarchs who ruled the State of Hyderabad from 1719 all the way to 1948).
Another exceptionally vivid description is that of the chaotic bazaar where Bee and Lakshmi repeatedly go to buy precious silks, fiercely haggling over the price with a stubborn vendor.
Please, don't think for a single moment that all these rich, detailed descriptions will weigh down or slow the plot; on the contrary, they are exactly what gave each scene its historical authenticity and made me feel truly involved in the entire journey!
👑 REAL HISTORY AND ESPIONAGE GAMES
The true brilliance of this novel lies in the flawless way fiction connects to real, unvarnished history.
Against the backdrop of Bee's personal life, an immense and ruthless political chessboard unfolds. It's the autumn of 1798, and India is a literal powder keg: the British and French empires are fighting tooth and nail for absolute control and the immense riches of the territory, and the royal court of the Nizam of Hyderabad finds itself trapped right in the middle of the imperial storm.
The author is brilliant at weaving the fiction by seamlessly inserting real historical figures who are continually mentioned or who directly cross paths with our protagonists:
• There's James Achilles Kirkpatrick, the famous British Resident, who finds himself managing a colossal, stressful network of international espionage and delicate diplomacy.
• Then there's the charming, brilliant John Malcolm, who arrives like a sudden hurricane to lend Kirkpatrick a helping hand and neutralize the brewing French threat.
• On the other side of the political fence, tensions are sky-high: after the mysterious death of the beloved French general Raymond, Jean-Pierre Piron—a fervent, ruthless Jacobin who deeply hates the English and threatens to upset the entire balance of power—takes full military command.
All these military intrigues, hidden camps, and high-stakes spy games (including the extremely risky secret mission that our beloved Harry will be drawn into) are not fictional at all: they actually happened in that exact, faithful autumn of 1798! Every single element helps you realize just how complex, terrifying, and endlessly fascinating life was in that specific part of the world.

| 📜 THE AUTHOR'S LITERARY LICENSES
As we know, historical novels often alter certain elements of reality to make the plot more romantic or mysterious. Through my personal online research, I discovered that the author drew creative inspiration for her characters from three real historical figures who actually lived either a century earlier or almost a century later:
• Jahanara Begum was a real imperial princess, but she lived 100 years earlier!
• Lakshmi, the fierce soldier, is beautifully inspired by a legendary warrior princess who famously fought on horseback.
• The real physical structure called "Jahanara Mahal" does exist, but it is located hundreds of kilometers away, inside the famous Agra Fort, and is the gorgeous white marble pavilion that belonged to the Mughal princess.
| 🏁 IN CONCLUSION: A FIVE-STAR HISTORICAL MASTERPIECE
This perfect, seamless mix of historical reality, high-stakes adventure, a woman's fierce desire for redemption, and a beautifully volatile love story kept me absolutely glued to the pages until the very last second.
It's a historical novel I would wholeheartedly recommend to everyone, including young adults, because the writing is incredibly clean and there is nothing inappropriate that might upset sensitive readers. On the contrary, it's a perfect blend of adventure and romance, written by a European author who masterfully succeeds in showing us the historical events from the locals' point of view, despite the main characters being English.
The only people to whom I feel like saying, "Wait, this isn't for you," are those readers looking for an explicit, passionate romance where love scenes are the sole focus of the book... that is simply not the case here. This is a rich, atmospheric historical epic.

Post Scriptum: I want to make a little confession about my rating!
Initially, I thought about giving this book 4.8 stars rounded up to 5, simply because the romance wasn't explored deeply enough, leaving me with a lingering "reader's hunger." But after spending the evening, the night, and the morning constantly thinking about these characters, I realized I am in a massive "Book Hangover"! I cannot detach myself from this story.
If a book makes you want to start reading it all over again the exact second you close it, it deserves a full 5 stars, no questions asked! I would have added a 6th golden star if the author had granted us more pages of pure romance and kisses!

Che storia meravigliosa, amiche lettrici! Ricomincerei a leggerla da capo in questo preciso istante! 💘
Questa è una magnifica storia di profonda rinascita e una delicatissima storia d’amore. È ricca di intrighi personali e politici ispirati a fatti e personaggi storici reali. Con la sua ambientazione orientale affascinante e ricca di atmosfera, un ampio cast di personaggi ben delineati nelle loro varie sfaccettature e un finale mozzafiato con un colpo di scena inaspettato e imprevedibile, questo libro mi ha completamente rubato il cuore.
La protagonista e il giovane uomo del suo cuore li ho letteralmente adorati!
Mi sono piaciuti in tutto e per tutto, e l’unica microscopica cosa che toglierebbe un po’ di smalto al punteggio (impedendomi di inventare una sesta stella d'oro!) è il fatto che avrei voluto la loro storia d’amore ancora più in primo piano e descritta in modo più approfondito.
Se solo i baci e le scene romantiche fossero stati un po’ più lunghi e intensi, il libro sarebbe stato la perfezione assoluta per me! Ma anche così, resta un capolavoro.
📜 LA TRAMA IN BREVE:
Dopo la devastante perdita del marito e trovandosi sull'orlo della totale rovina finanziaria, la giovane Beatrice Sinclair fa coraggiosamente le valigie e lascia l'Hampshire. La sua destinazione? Il vibrante, soffocante calore di Hyderabad, in India, dove suo fratello ralph è di stanza con la potente Compagnia Britannica delle Indie Orientali.

👥 I PERSONAGGI PRINCIPALI E UNA STORIA D’AMORE SLOW-BURN
Harry e Bee si conoscevano fin da bambini, quando anche lei e il fratello Ralph vivevano in India.
Il libro si apre proprio con una bellissima e nostalgica scena indietro nel tempo, in cui Bee, suo fratello minore e Harry s'introducono di nascosto ed esplorano il Palazzo proibito di Jahanara Mahal. I bambini giocano alla ricerca di un leggendario gioiello rubato, la fabled Rosa di Golconda—una gemma da cui Harry sembra non solo affascinato, ma quasi ossessionato.
I giochi tra i bambini denotano già una certa dolce simpatia e un affetto protettivo tra Harry e Bee. Proprio quello stesso giorno, però, i due fratelli vengono riportati di forza dalla madre in Inghilterra a causa delle rigide convenzioni sociali dell'epoca, e i nostri due beniamini si reincontreranno solo 24 lunghi anni dopo.
Quando finalmente si rivedono in India, nonostante l'iniziale e intenso imbarazzo di lei, Harry le parla con una tale disinvoltura e calore, come se si fossero lasciati il pomeriggio prima. Tutta la storia è splendidamente raccontata in prima persona da Bee stessa. Durante il racconto, la protagonista aggiunge i suoi pensieri più intimi, le sue delusioni, le sue sconfitte, le sue paure, ma anche le sue speranze e quelle nuove esperienze che immancabilmente creano grandi aspettative.
La vediamo crescere magnificamente, passando dall'accettazione passiva che per lei non ci sia più nulla nella grigia Inghilterra, al crearsi da sola un futuro radioso in un nuovo posto. Bee segue le proprie idee innovative per inserirsi all'interno di un contesto difficile, non solo facendo la propria parte per sopravvivere, ma creando un progetto straordinario la cui realizzazione coinvolgerà e riscatterà tante altre vite di donne locali.
Bee mi piace tantissimo perché è un personaggio positivo, ma splendidamente imperfetto. L'autrice ci mostra la sua fragilità cruda, i suoi punti deboli, ma vediamo anche la sua grande forza di volontà e come cerca di combattere con le unghie e con i denti le avversità e le visioni ottuse e patriarcali degli altri.
È incredibilmente soddisfacente vedere come si oppone alla visione maschile della "donna debole ed incapace". Bee riesce a trascinare in questo pensiero di forza e indipendenza anche le altre donne indiane, che fino a quel momento avevano conosciuto solo la totale sottomissione al volere dei loro mariti. Bee porta la modernità del controllo sul proprio destino tramite l'impegno, il lavoro e la dignità. La vediamo soffrire, arrabbiarsi e rialzarsi fiera dopo ogni caduta; nonostante il suo successo, non la vediamo mai assumere toni presuntuosi, è semplicemente una ragazza in cui immedesimarci totalmente.
🕵️♂️ HARRY: UN PADRE TENERO E UN AFFASCINANTE AVVENTURIERO
Nato da padre inglese e madre francese, Harry sembra essersi amalgamato perfettamente al ricco tessuto del mondo indiano sin da quando era un bambino. Anche da adulto, splendido giovane padre e vedovo di una ragazza indiana di nobili origini, collabora a livello professionale con le forze britanniche, ma sceglie di vivere la sua vita personale completamente unito alla sua famiglia indiana.
Ciò che amo profondamente di Harry è che, a differenza di Ralph (il fratello minore di Bee), ha una mentalità meravigliosamente aperta e non pone mai confini o limiti alle donne, né le giudica come esseri incapaci o stupidi. Questo atteggiamento è in totale contrasto con Ralph che, pur vivendo in India, mantiene i modi rigidi e arroganti degli uomini dell'epoca, le cui mogli erano tenute rigorosamente lontane dalla politica, dall'indipendenza e dagli affari. Harry è l'esatto contrario!
Egli incoraggia costantemente Bee, le fa sapere che la supporta nelle sue idee rivoluzionarie e, quando le muove una critica, lo fa sempre in maniera costruttiva. La aiuta dolcemente a capire dove stava sbagliando nel rapportarsi con donne di una cultura e di tradizioni diverse dalla sua. Oltre a questo, Harry è un padre tenero, dolce e giocoso, di bell'aspetto e straordinariamente avventuroso, il che lo rende ancora più irresistibile e affascinante non solo agli occhi di Bee, ma anche a quelli di tutte noi lettrici!
🔥 UNA PASSIONE CHE FA SOGNARE
La loro storia d'amore mi ha fatto letteralmente innamorare. Sebbene si sviluppi nel libro attraverso poche scene, una manciata di baci e una magica notte d'amore descritta a grandi linee, la tensione dell'innamoramento è palpabile in ogni riga del racconto di Bee.
Gli sguardi intensi di lui, il cuore palpitante di lei, il desiderio di essere baciata, il bruciante bacio rubato e impulsivo di lui, la voglia di rivedersi durante i giorni in cui Harry è via in missione... sono momenti di pura poesia!
Nelle scene di vita quotidiana che condividono con il piccolo Jay e con le rispettive famiglie, Harry e Bee si comportano già come una famiglia ancora prima di essersi scambiati il primo bacio. Harry è sempre pronto a sostenerla, la segue con lo sguardo da lontano e la protegge. Bee ha pochissima esperienza con gli uomini, se non per il suo breve e freddo matrimonio con un anziano inglese, ma non ha bisogno di istruzioni: i loro cuori si parlano attraverso le emozioni e, nonostante le trame infingarde di una rivale, il loro amore si rivela più forte di tutto.
Il finale è dolcissimo e splendido. Non posso dire altro per non fare spoiler, ma è davvero bellissimo (anche se, lo ripeto, avrei tanto voluto che l'autrice regalasse alla loro storia qualche pagina e qualche dettaglio in più!).
👥 I PERSONAGGI SECONDARI: UN CAST RICCO E SFACCETTATO
Se Bee e Harry mi hanno fatto battere il cuore, sappiate che Charlotte Betts ha fatto un lavoro monumentale anche con i personaggi secondari.
Nessuno è lì per fare da semplice comparsa; ognuno è una tessera fondamentale per capire questo mondo così complesso.
Il contrasto più affascinante è senza dubbio quello tra le donne e gli uomini del libro.
Da un lato c'è l'ottusità quasi irritante di Ralph (il fratello di Bee): incarna alla perfezione l'uomo britannico dell'epoca, convinto che le donne non debbano toccare né la politica né gli affari. Dall'altro, veniamo letteralmente travolti dalla forza d'impatto delle figure femminili.
C'è la maestosa potenza e la forza di carattere di Jahanara Begum, la padrona del palazzo; la dolcezza protettiva di Leela, che ama Ralph nonostante tutti i suoi difetti; e lo spirito battagliero e rabbioso di Lakshmi, che vi terrà costantemente col fiato sospeso.
E che dire del laboratorio di ricamo? I battibecchi, le rivalità e le dinamiche tra le ricamatrici sono uno spaccato di vita quotidiana pazzesco.
A bilanciare la tensione ci pensano la spontaneità e la vivacità travolgente del piccolo Jay, il figlio di Harry, e la premurosa severità di sua zia Sangita, che regalano al romanzo quel senso di "famiglia" così intimo e dolce.
I personaggi sono molti e ammetto che inizialmente ho fatto un po’ di confusione, soprattutto a causa del termine "Begum" che segue i nomi delle donne nobili (significava infatti “signora dell'alta società o della corte del Nizam”). Ma una volta preso il ritmo, vi renderete conto che ogni singolo personaggio è essenziale per delineare il chiaroscuro della Hyderabad di fine Settecento.
🕌 L’AMBIENTAZIONE: IL FASCINO DEL "SET" ORIENTALE
Una cosa che mi ha letteralmente stregata di questo libro è la straordinaria bravura di Charlotte Betts nel dipingere l’ambientazione e le scene attraverso tutti e cinque i sensi.
L’autrice ha una capacità pazzesca di trasportare il lettore in un luogo così lontano nel tempo e, nel mio caso, così profondamente diverso dalla mia cultura italiana.
Mentre leggevo, riuscivo quasi a percepire il calore vibrante dell’India attraverso il racconto dei profumi intensi delle spezie, degli olii profumati e del cattivo odore dei fossi fangosi.
Potevo vedere i colori vividi delle stoffe, sentire il loro tocco setoso e la loro leggerezza sulla pelle. Sentivo il fascino dell’imponenza architettonica di lussuosi palazzi, ricchi di intarsi arabeschi e gioielli incastonati in ogni dove, in netto contrasto con le crepe sui muri e la polvere sui lampadari preziosi.
Quell’atmosfera così esotica e magnetica, ma anche piena di contrasti e pericoli, andava di pari passo con un clima volatile: prima caldissimo, afoso e quasi soffocante, e poi umido e pericoloso con le forti piogge monsoniche. Sono rimasta estasiata dal Jahanara Mahal, con il suo fascino decadente e i suoi segreti: rappresenta in un certo senso il terzo protagonista della storia, un vero e proprio magico personaggio che ha assistito a gioie e dolori delle anime che lo abitano.
Se il Jahanara Mahal è un luogo d’invenzione, le bellezze architettoniche descritte dall’autrice sono storicamente vere! Lo possiamo riscontrare cercando sul web un altro palazzo citato, il maestoso Palazzo Chowmahalla, dove Bee viene invitata dalle mogli del Nizam (i sovrani musulmani che governarono lo Stato di Hyderabad dal 1719 fino al 1948).
Un'altra descrizione assolutamente vivace e coinvolgente è quella del bazaar in cui Bee e Lakshmi si recano più volte a comprare stoffe preziose, contrattando sul prezzo con un venditore testardo.
Attenzione, non pensate neanche per un momento che tutte queste descrizioni vivide e particolareggiate possano appesantire la trama; al contrario, sono ciò che ha dato assoluta veridicità alle scene e mi ha fatta sentire realmente partecipe di tutta la storia.

👑 I FILI DELLA STORIA VERA E DEI PERSONAGGI REALI
Ma la bellezza di questo romanzo sta anche nel modo in cui la finzione si aggancia alla Storia reale.
Sullo sfondo della vita di Bee, infatti, si muove un immenso e spietato scacchiere politico. Siamo nell'autunno del 1798 e l'India è una polveriera: l'impero britannico e quello francese si stanno contendendo con le unghie e con i denti il controllo e le ricchezze del territorio, e la corte del Nizam di Hyderabad si ritrova proprio nel mezzo della tempesta.
L’autrice è bravissima a tessere la trama inserendo figure storiche reali che vengono continuamente menzionate o che incrociano il destino dei nostri protagonisti:
• C'è James Achilles Kirkpatrick, il Residente britannico, che si ritrova a gestire una colossale e stressante rete di spionaggio e diplomazia.
• C'è l'affascinante e brillantissimo John Malcolm, arrivato come un uragano per dare man forte a Kirkpatrick e neutralizzare la minaccia francese.
• Dall'altra parte della barricata la tensione è alle stelle: dopo la misteriosa morte del generale francese Raymond, prende il comando Jean-Pierre Piron, un giacobino fervente che odia gli inglesi e minaccia di far saltare tutti gli equilibri.
Tutti questi intrighi, gli accampamenti militari e i giochi di spie – come il piano rischiosissimo in cui si butterà a capofitto il nostro Harry – non sono inventati: sono successi davvero in quell'autunno del 1798!
Le NOTE STORICHE a fine libro e il GLOSSARIO sono un vero e proprio regalo per gli amanti della storia!
📜 LICENZE LETTERARIE DELL’AUTRICE
Come sappiamo, i romanzi storici spesso modificano elementi della realtà per rendere la trama più romantica o misteriosa. Tramite le mie ricerche sul web ho scoperto che l’autrice, per i suoi personaggi, si è ispirata a figure storiche realmente vissute un secolo prima o quasi un secolo dopo:
• Jahanara Begum era una principessa reale, ma è vissuta 100 anni prima!
• La figura di soldatessa di Lakshmi è splendidamente ispirata a una principessa guerriera leggendaria che combatteva a cavallo.
• La vera struttura storica chiamata "Jahanara Mahal" esiste, ma si trova a centinaia di chilometri di distanza, all'interno del famoso Forte di Agra, ed è il padiglione in marmo bianco appartenuto alla principessa Moghul.
🏁 IN CONCLUSIONE
Questo mix perfetto tra realtà storica e avventura, insieme alla voglia di riscatto di Bee e alla storia d’amore, sempre in bilico, con Harry, mi hanno tenuta incollata alle pagine fino all'ultimo secondo.
È un romanzo che consiglierei a tutti, inclusi i giovani adulti, perché non vi è nulla di sconveniente che possa turbare gli animi più sensibili, anzi è un perfetto mélange tra avventura e sentimento, scritto da un’autrice europea, ma che ci mostra le cose dal punto di vista degli abitanti locali, nonostante i protagonisti principali siano inglesi.
Le uniche persone a cui mi sento di dire "aspettate, questo non è per voi" sono le lettrici in cerca di storie d’amore esplicite e passionali dove l'erotismo è il focus del libro... non è questo il caso. Questo è un ricco e affascinante affresco storico.
⚠️ LE PECCHE DELL’EDIZIONE ITALIANA
A differenza del solito, ho letto questo libro in edizione italiana, avendolo regalato a mia madre qualche anno fa (anche a lei è piaciuto tantissimo). Non lo farò mai più!
Ho trovato infatti alcune "stonature" che rovinano l'incanto dell'immersione nel passato, soprattutto per gli appassionati di ambientazioni storiche come me.
Se masticate l’inglese, il mio consiglio è di preferire assolutamente l’edizione in lingua originale! Ecco perché:
• 1. I "tagli" editoriali: La Newton Compton è famosa per proporre libri a prezzi molto accessibili, ma per mantenere bassi i costi d'impaginazione spesso applica una politica di forte sintesi o taglio delle appendici. Nelle edizioni originali inglesi di Charlotte Betts, le note storiche sono ricche, dettagliate e spiegano esattamente dove finisce la realtà e inizia la licenza poetica. Nell'adattamento italiano, queste note vengono spesso "sforbiciate" e ridotte al minimo indispensabile, lasciando una sensazione di incompletezza.
• 2. L'errore del "Lei" nel 1798: Questo è un anacronismo storico evidente. In italiano, nel Settecento e fino a metà del Novecento, la formula di cortesia ufficiale, rispettosa e usata tra nobili, militari e persino in famiglia era rigorosamente il "Voi". Sentire dei soldati della Compagnia delle Indie o dei nobili indiani del 1798 darsi del "Lei" spezza completamente l'illusione storica e fa suonare i dialoghi come se si svolgessero in un ufficio moderno del 2026! I traduttori odierni tendono ad appiattire il testo sulla sensibilità contemporanea per paura che il "Voi" risulti pesante, senza rendersi conto che così tolgono tutto il fascino e la "patina" dell'epoca.
🤫 PICCOLA CONFESSIONE
Una piccola ma importante Postilla: Voglio farvi una piccola confessione sul punteggio!
Inizialmente avevo pensato di dare a questo libro 4,8 stelle arrotondate a 5, proprio perché avrei voluto che la storia d'amore fosse approfondita di più, lasciandomi con un pizzico di "fame" insoddisfatta. Ma dopo aver passato la serata, la notte e la mattina a pensare continuamente a questi personaggi, mi sono resa conto che sono in pieno "Book Hangover"! Non riesco a staccarmi da questa storia. E se un libro ti fa venire la voglia matta di rileggerlo da capo non appena lo chiudi, allora merita 5 stelle piene, senza discussioni! Avrei inventato una sesta stella d'oro se l'autrice ci avesse regalato più pagine di baci e romanticismo!
